Availability of wind energy resource potential for power generation at Jos, Nigeria

O. O. Ajayi, R. O. Fagbenle, J. Katende, J. O. Okeniyi

Frontiers in Energy 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 376-385 doi: 10.1007/s11708-011-0167-5

Abstract: The objective of this study was to assess the potential viability of the wind resource potential in Jos, Plateau state, Nigeria for power generation. The monthly mean wind speeds that span from 1987 to 2007 were employed to statistically analyze the monthly, annual and seasonal potentials of the wind energy resources at the site. Besides, the results were employed together with two models of wind energy conversion system to simulate the likely average output power. The outcome showed that Jos was suitable as a site for wind farm projects of varying sizes and that MW·h to GW·h of electricity is likely to be produced per period of months, seasons and years. The average wind speed range at the site was also estimated to be between 6.7 and 11.8 m/s across the months, years and seasons.

An emerging market for groundwater remediation in China: Policies, statistics, and future outlook

Deyi Hou, Guanghe Li, Paul Nathanail

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 1, doi: 10.1007/s11783-018-1027-x

Abstract: There is a rapidly emerging and potentially huge market for the remediation of contaminated groundwater in China. The Chinese government published a Water Action Plan in April 2015, a Soil Action Plan in May 2016, and a draft Soil Pollution Prevention and Control Law in June 2017. All of these new policies and regulations put pressures on local governments and contaminated site owners, obliging them to conduct site investigation and to cleanup contaminated groundwater. The Chinese population in northern regions heavily depend on groundwater, with nearly 70% of water supply coming from aquifer sources in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. However, poor groundwater quality due to natural geochemical background and anthropogeic pollution is a serious concern, with poor or very poor quality water observed in nearly 80% of groundwater monitoring wells in 17 northern provinces. Shallow groundwater in many areas has been contaminated by toxic pollutants such as heavy metals and chlorinated organic compounds. There is an urgent need to better understand the situation and to conduct groundwater remediation at contaminated sites. The Chinese government is investing heavily in the research and development for groundwater remediation, which is expected to greatly add to the quality and quantity of groundwater remediation projects in the near future.

An investigation on patient dose in screen-film diagnostic radiology in Lhasa City, Xizang Autonomous Region, China

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 4,   Pages 506-509 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0294-y

Abstract:

This study aimed to investigate patient dose in diagnostic screen-film radiographic examinations in the city of Lhasa, China. Seven out of the twenty-six hospitals registered with the Lhasa Health Bureau were included in the investigation. The entrance surface air Kerma (ESAK) of seven conventional screen-film radiology X-ray equipment in these hospitals was measured with a QA dosimeter in September 2012. The X-ray examinations were divided into three categories: PA (posterior-anterior) chest, upper/lower limb, and AP (anterior-posterior) lumbar spine. For each category, ESAKs were calculated and analyzed. The mean ESAK was 0.6 mGy for PA chest, 0.3 mGy for upper/lower limb, and 1.8 mGy for AP lumbar spine. In addition, the mean ESAK value recorded for PA chest X-ray examinations exceeded the corresponding value recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (0.4 mGy).

Probabilistic model for vessel-bridge collisions in the Three Gorges Reservoir

Bo GENG , Hong WANG , Junjie WANG ,

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 3,   Pages 279-285 doi: 10.1007/s11709-009-0044-z

Abstract: Based on a field observation on vessel transit path of three bridges over the Yangtze River in the Three Gorges Reservoir, and an analysis of the geometric probabilistic model of transiting vessels in collision probability calculation, the aberrancy angle and vessel velocity probabilistic model related with impact force, a probabilistic model is established and also verified by goodness-of-fit test. The vessel transit path distribution can be expressed by the normal distribution model. For the Three Gorges Reservoir, the mean and standard deviation adopt 0.2 and 0.1, respectively ( is the channel width). The aberrancy angle distribution of vessels accepts maximum I distribution model, and its distribution parameters can be taken as 0.314 and 4.354. The velocity distribution of up-bound and down-bound vessels can also be expressed by the normal distribution model.

Artificial intelligence and statistics Perspective

Bin YU, Karl KUMBIER

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2018, Volume 19, Issue 1,   Pages 6-9 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1700813

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is intrinsically data-driven. It calls for the application of statistical concepts through human-machine collaboration during the generation of data, the development of algorithms, and the evaluation of results. This paper discusses how such human-machine collaboration can be approached through the statistical concepts of population, question of interest, representativeness of training data, and scrutiny of results (PQRS). The PQRS workflow provides a conceptual framework for integrating statistical ideas with human input into AI products and researches. These ideas include experimental design principles of randomization and local control as well as the principle of stability to gain reproducibility and interpretability of algorithms and data results. We discuss the use of these principles in the contexts of self-driving cars, automated medical diagnoses, and examples from the authors’ collaborative research.

Qiang HE, Jun YE, Hongzhao LIU, Jinling LI,

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2010, Volume 5, Issue 1,   Pages 93-97 doi: 10.1007/s11465-009-0083-0

Abstract: Cu nanoparticles as N32 base oil additives are studied in the paper and their structure is characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The widely used steel-steel friction system is chosen to test the feasibility and practicality of Cu nanoparticles as bearing lubricant additives. The results show that N32 base oil with 0.5% Cu nanoparticle can improve the test sample contact fatigue life than pure N32 base oil.

Performance and kinetics of iron-based oxygen carriers reduced by carbon monoxide for chemical looping combustion

Xiuning HUA,Wei WANG,Feng WANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 6,   Pages 1130-1138 doi: 10.1007/s11783-015-0821-y

Abstract: Chemical looping combustion is a promising technology for energy conversion due to its low-carbon, high-efficiency, and environmental-friendly feature. A vital issue for CLC process is the development of oxygen carrier, since it must have sufficient reactivity. The mechanism and kinetics of CO reduction on iron-based oxygen carriers namely pure Fe O and Fe O supported by alumina (Fe O /Al O ) were investigated using thermo-gravimetric analysis. Fe O /Al O showed better reactivity over bare Fe O toward CO reduction. This was well supported by the observed higher rate constant for Fe O /Al O over pure Fe O with respective activation energy of 41.1±2.0 and 33.3±0.8 kJ·mol . The proposed models were compared via statistical approach comprising Akaike information criterion with correction coupled with F-test. The phase-boundary reaction and diffusion control models approximated to 95% confidence level along with scanning electron microscopy results; revealed the promising reduction reactions of pure Fe O and Fe O /Al O . The boosting recital of iron-based oxygen carrier support toward efficient chemical looping combustion could be explained accurately through the present study.
